Language Instruction
Developing a foundation for communication, knowledge, and learning.
Language skills are required in order to understand what we hear, explain our ideas, and participate in conversations. Language is also the primary modality of instruction in classrooms. Spoken language lays the foundation for our social skills, literacy skills, and learning. Even subtle language problems can impact social and academic success. With the right support, your child can improve their underlying language weaknesses.
Language instruction improves:
- Depth and breadth of vocabulary knowledge
- Comprehension of directions
- Sentence formulation
- Conversation skills
- Comprehension of stories
- Higher-level language skills (abstract language, making inferences, drawing conclusions, reasoning)
- Purposeful and meaningful language expression (telling stories, staying on topic, describing, explaining, giving an opinion, providing a logical argument, comparing and contrasting, explaining cause and effect.)
Literacy Instruction
Building a clear understanding of the patterns within the English writing system.
Students with language and executive function weaknesses are at a greater risk for experiencing difficulties when learning to read and write. Students with Dyslexia have a specific learning challenge when trying to make sense of reading and spelling. Fortunately, learning to read and write doesn’t have to be so difficult. The English written language has very predictable patterns and structures, and by teaching these patterns to our students we are able to unlock their ability to read and write with great success.
